Sailfish Seduction

13 01 2011

I just led a small expedition of underwater photographers to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, where we had some epic encounters with Atlantic sailfish. Being in the water with upwards of 30 – 50 sailfish is pretty awesome. Here are some solo sailfish images. As usual, more to follow…

Cenotes Underwater Photography – Amazing Light

11 01 2011

I just spent two short days photographing some of the most beautiful light i’ve ever seen underwater. Cenotes are fresh and brackish water sink holes in the jungle of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, just south of Playa del Carmen. These are cavern and  cave systems that ultimately lead out to the ocean. The water is crystal clear and the light is absolutely on a whole other level. Here are just a few examples, More to follow…

Thanks to Dive Aventuras and the Omni Puerto Aventuras Beach Resort for being such wonderful hosts!

Photographing The Ocean’s Apex Predator

3 09 2010

I just returned from Isla Guadalupe, Mexico, where I led a group of underwater photographers on an expedition to photograph great white sharks. This was definitely one of the more unique underwater photography expeditions that I have led over the last several years. These are graceful, powerful and humbling creatures to be in the water with. Here is an initial taste of the action.

An Earthly Event That Can Be Seen From Space

24 07 2010

They say that the South African Sardine Run is such a massive event that it can be viewed from space. Well, while at the Sardine Run this year, I pointed my camera in the other direction. Apparently the sky is also so clear that you can see space from the Sardine Run!

Took a day off of diving to explore the area around Mbotyi. The views are pretty spectacular. I saw this image in my mind the moment we drove past it.

Live From South Africa … Sardine Run

8 07 2010

Amid world cup mania here in South Africa, I spent the last few days at a much bigger event – diving the sardine run, the largest species migration and marine predatory event on earth. While I didn’t yet experience the epic level activity from last year (check out these posts: sardine run 1, sardine run 2, sardine run 3), it’s been active, albeit in limited visibility water. I have one more week to go, and feel the sardine run gods are smiling. Here are a couple of images from the last few days in the interim.

Just Monkeying Around

It’s hard not to feel a connection to these Macaque monkeys. Taken in Bali’s Monkey Forest in Ubud.

Boo! Raja Ampat

9 05 2010

It was beautiful morning light peeking through the holes in the small island of Boo in Raja Ampat Indonesia. I could have shot here all day!
