I just returned from Isla Guadalupe, Mexico, where I led a group of underwater photographers on an expedition to photograph great white sharks. This was definitely one of the more unique underwater photography expeditions that I have led over the last several years. These are graceful, powerful and humbling creatures to be in the water with. Here is an initial taste of the action.
This was my first attempt at HDR with a super long exposure during the day to create the silk-like water effect. Right in back of where I am standing is about a thousand foot drop off the real falls. That picture to follow…

They say that the South African Sardine Run is such a massive event that it can be viewed from space. Well, while at the Sardine Run this year, I pointed my camera in the other direction. Apparently the sky is also so clear that you can see space from the Sardine Run!
Took a day off of diving to explore the area around Mbotyi. The views are pretty spectacular. I saw this image in my mind the moment we drove past it.
Amid world cup mania here in South Africa, I spent the last few days at a much bigger event – diving the sardine run, the largest species migration and marine predatory event on earth. While I didn’t yet experience the epic level activity from last year (check out these posts: sardine run 1, sardine run 2, sardine run 3), it’s been active, albeit in limited visibility water. I have one more week to go, and feel the sardine run gods are smiling. Here are a couple of images from the last few days in the interim.
Summertime is here and I’m getting ready for another season of outdoor underwater fashion shoots. Just going through some of last summer’s images and figured I’d post one never before seen shot of model Nelly. In the meantime, I’m off to the Bahamas this week…

We recently returned from North Sulawesi, Indonesia (thanks to Eco Divers), where I was invited to be the “photographer in residence” for a week. Unfortunately mother nature had other plans for us. During the week we only had a one small window of sun to shoot some snorkeling images for a new Cressi catalog. The water quality was affected by the constant rain, but we salvaged a shot or two. This is normally the dry season – chalk it up to climate change.
It was beautiful morning light peeking through the holes in the small island of Boo in Raja Ampat Indonesia. I could have shot here all day!
